79 years ago on Sep. 8, the Siege of Leningrad begun, lasting 872 days during which 1.1 million civilians died. It was and still is the deadliest siege of all time.

"Death has become a phenomenon observed at every turn. When you step outside in the morning, you stumble over corpses lying in the gateway, and in the street. The dead bodies lie there for a long time, because there's nobody to dispose of them." - Yelena Skriabina"People now die in a very simple manner: first, they lose interest in everything. Then, they lie in bed, never to rise again. They die as if falling asleep, and the surrounding people, half dead themselves, pay them no attention." - Diary of an unnamed Leningrader via /r/communism https://ift.tt/2R8ReRu
