Hello comrades,I've been a decade long communist and soviet armchair historian. This recent protest in Belarus had me siding with the anit-Lukashenko crowd until recently. The amount of violence reported by the OMON repulsed me. Before that, I heard that their economy was stagnant, that the government was not investing in infrastructure, and generally wasn't helping the people. Is that all false, comrades? I admit, I found it compelling to chant along with the protesters as they "topple an oppressive, outdated, corrupt government." Reading another thread here makes me think I fell for a lot of western/capitalist propaganda. If so, damn was it compelling. As I try to grapple with my changing opinion, it does feel like putting blinders on to ignore the violence in the country. I'm very familiar with the heavy hand the USSR had to use, but I also would have hoped we've moved past that.Cheers via /r/communism https://ift.tt/31ZHZZL
