How should consumer goods be dealt with in socialism?

Hi comrades,So how should consumer goods be dealt with in socialism? I ask this because I’ve heard that many in the eastern bloc and Soviet republics desired or at the very least were attracted to the variety of products that the western capitalist countries had access to as well as those who immigrated from socialist countries mention the same things. (Please correct and educate me if this premise is incorrect)I for one don’t care about 50 different brands of socks, towels, potato chips, etc as they all are essentially slight variations of the same thing if not just outright the same thing but with a different logo. But believe that most people do not have this view and cannot deny the manipulative nature of capitalist mass marketing that artificially creates people’s desires for their brands by preying on people’s insecurities and in some cases even subtly shame those who do not have their products. Capitalist product advertisements are truly a horrible thing.I think that not even the best censorship would be sufficient block these products/advertisement from a nation and it would be inevitable that an underground market forms which would eventually expose the people to these manipulations. So what can be done? Should the centrally planned economy compete with foreign capitalists with their own variety of consumer goods? Propaganda to counter capitalist product/advertisement? Just allow capitalist products but heavily censor and regulate them?I’m very curious to hear your ideas. Thanks in advance for taking your time to read this. via /r/communism https://ift.tt/2uiLIDU
