I am sure most of us are concerned with our livelihoods about where to find money for rent , employment, etc. (These concerns also affect many workers, irrespective of the coronavirus pandemic.) I am also concerned about not contracting cornonavirus so I would not be infecting my somewhat old parents. These worries are immediate and visceral to us, as opposed to whatever remote threat the countries enumerated in the title pose to "liberal democracies". None of us will lose any sleep tonight over the DPRK and Russia. The prevalent propaganda states that the armed forces protect our freedom and liberty. In the United States and perhaps many allied countries (such as NATO countries, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea), immense resources have been directed into the military. In the case of South Korea and Saudi Arabia, their military budgets and subsidies from the US exceed that of their rivals, the DPRK and Iran, many times over. Just think how these resources can be used for medicine and education.Much propaganda talks about the "preparedness" of the US armed forces needs to take on China or Russia. We need to make sure our nuclear "deterrent" is modernized and that we have enough aerial tankers to fight in the South China Sea so the F-35s can have enough fuel to strike into China and return to base! We need a new stealth bomber and new nuclear aircraft carriers! How pathetic! We were not even prepared for the pandemic because medical workers do not have enough masks and gloves! We cannot even test enough suspected patients to have epidemiologically valuable information about the prevalence of coronavirus! We do know the real number of infections.I was motivated to post this because I came across this article with the following paragraph:Why would these countries do this? If America is distracted and its resources concentrated elsewhere, now would be the time for Washington’s rivals to act. People are worried about the coronavirus, and the U.S. military may get involved in helping provide medical services. Additionally, it looks bad during a domestic crisis for the U.S. president to fly overseas for emergency meetings or to appear focused elsewhere. Moreover, large U.S. military drills in Asia or Europe have been or could be canceled given the concerns about spreading COVID-19.Oh, boo-hoo! The military drills are canceled! Perhaps the US should worry about real threats than the bugbears of DPRK and Russia. Perhaps the DPRK and Russia are not really a threat.I became an anti-imperialist (and later an M-L) when I realized that the US military campaigns in Iraq and Vietnam do not personally benefit me or most US workers; they merely serve to subjugate other countries and force into the West's geopolitical orbit. They make the world more free for capital, but not for workers. It should be common sense that the Viet Cong or Putin have never posed any real threat to the workers in the West. Indeed, it is the bourgeois media that is the purveyor of fake news by influencing our minds so that we think anti-imperialist countries are our enemies. While we pay homage to the cult of the military that supposedly protects us from the delusions the media feeds us, our medical system is woefully unprepared when we have to face a real virus that is literally killing us. via /r/communism https://ift.tt/397ZRSD
