As far as I know, a lot of music coming from the west were banned in the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc in general due to their corrosive and corruptive influence on culture. If that is the case, was it the artists being from the west considered corrosive or was it something inherent in the genre? If the latter, why? If the former, and this is not meant as an attack, why are communist states in that time period so quick to ban western music? I understand the theory of pop culture as being toxic to proletarian culture due to its associations with consumerism but were communist states so insecure in their position that they would ban western cultural products? Naturally, if there's any misconceptions in my question feel free to correct me. via /r/communism https://ift.tt/3fWhlG6
