How should we approach atrocities committed in the name of communism?

I think we can all acknowledge that, though specific numbers may be disputed, a fair amout of atrocities have been commited in the name of communism in the 20th century. My question is, how should we approach them? Is it worth studying these cases in order to see what went wrong?
