Term Limits and Grontocracy. A Key Factor in Dissolving the Soviet Union

The date is the 10th of November, 1982. Strange rumors of Leonid Brezhnev's body having fallen through his casket are circulating. This rumor, fact or fiction, represents a narrative in the then Soviet Union. Soviet leadership is old, bloated, and dying. By the 1980s, the average age of the politburo was roughly 70 years of age. Keep in mind the politburo was one of the highest organ in the CPSU. The body at the time saw no need for computer's and other cutting edge tech.A political system, easily compared to a Geontocracy, had held that old method would work, as they had for decades. However these old men, this old guard who held stagnant ideas was dying out entirely. After the death of Brezhnev flashed two more General-Secretaries. Then we come to Mikhail Gorbachev, a reformer. A man who vowed to remove the stagnation.A man who failed in his attempts. An arms race that bankrupted the country, followed by economic stagnation basically killed any positive impact Gorbachev had for healing the USSR. By the time the August Coup came support for communism had been killed. The coup failed primarily because of this.Source: Brezhnev Reconsidered, various articles on the August Coup via /r/communism https://ift.tt/2WtHkgK
