Why did Khrushchev's false "Secret Speech" cause so many "communists" to leave the movement?

Title.I don't understand how the speech could have been so politically devastating that it caused half of its "revolutionaries" to peace out and just leave. Aren't communists supposed to be more principled than that? via /r/communism https://ift.tt/2ylGCca
