What is the role of religion in a communist society?

Religion, historically (and also in my personal opinion) has often been a very repressive tool of the bourgeoise. Historical examples such as the use of indulgences, modern wealth hoarding of the Catholic and Mormon Church and televangelists, and the massive religious influence in society and particularly electoral politics, despite those religions being tax exempt, would paint organized religion as a bourgeoisie tool. However, I do understand the power of religion and its importance in identity, and its usefulness in organizing communities against oppressors. It can be crucial in the inspiration of small communities, and as such it is often attacked by imperialist and fascist invaders (Nazi Germany, as an obvious example). My understanding of this subject is obviously limited and based only upon personal opinion as a result of my personal interactions with the world and religion. The goal of this post is to become more educated, and I pose all questions in good faith. Any sort of reading material, documentaries, or anything would be appreciated. via /r/communism https://ift.tt/2K86zhj
