How would green/ eco socialism actually work?

The USSR did not develop in an ecologically friendly manner. This has been acknowledged by Marxist Leninists along with other leftists, who point out that this was because ecological disaster was not a major part of the human consciousness at the time. In addition, while Cuba is often pointed to as a country that has developed sustainably along socialist lines, this is largely because of US sanctions and embargo. Today, however, when socialism is achieved we cannot develop like the USSR did if we plan to develop in an ecologically friendly way.
