Hi Comrades, yesterday my brother and I had a... “friendly” discussion (yeah, no) regarding race and class issues in the United States, specifically regarding the issue of systemic oppression of blacks and the role of (forgive me for speaking of this most vile entity) amerikkkan cops. Now my brother is pretty much one of those “enlightened” centrists who believes that leftism (particularly marxism) is “absolutist” and that this ideology is what prevents me from making “rational”, “logical” judgements on issues, rendering me “dismissive” of alternative points of view and that marxism simply “doesn’t apply to every society on earth”.One such place he believes Marxist perspectives does not apply to is the United States (in his opinion), and that the current issue with black oppression is an exclusively racial thing that can only be fixed through peaceful protesting, not violence. Naturally being an ML myself I disagreed wholeheartedly with his views, pointing out that peaceful protesting has done little to change the root of racial inequality against blacks in amerikkka, namely their deplorable socioeconomic situation and the way the political economy is geared against not just blacks, but proletarians of all races and colours in general. He then counters with the example of Martin Luther King (wow, surprise surprise), and how his peaceful methods of protest paved the way to the end of segregation laws in the United States, not violent revolutionary methods, and goes so far as to dismiss revolutionary ideas as being incongruent with the reality of amerikkkan society. He ultimately asserts that this issue of racism in the US is exclusively a racial, not a class one, and although he admits this problem has a class character (which he was forced to concede given the “reality” he loves to harp on), he ardently rejects the notion that the proletarians, much less Blacks, require violent revolutionary movements to cause change in american society. We inevitably proceeded into a rather toxic, heated discussion regarding the amerikkkan police, in which he rejected my assertion that the american police is an institutionally racist organisation, which he in turn blames on US policymakers, saying that the people in government (with exclusive focus on Trump) are to blame for racism against Blacks, not the police, whom he argues are just doing their job to maintain law and order. I think at this point I pretty much gave up trying to win the debate as he was evidently falling into the “blue lives matter” and “just doing their job” rabbit hole, but I still continued arguing nonetheless because I felt the need to convince my brother of the error of his ways.Ultimately, I tried to persuade him that american liberal democracy has done f*ck all to change the fundamentals of US politics, be it their domestic politics (exploitation and racism) or their foreign policy (imperialism, neocolonialism and even more exploitation). He rejects this idea (what a surprise) and claims that elections in the US do make an impact on american domestic and foreign politics, giving the example of Obama vs Trump, stating that the election of Trump has meant that their allies (more like vassals) such as the EU are becomingly increasingly frustrated by Trump’s idiotic politics, while on the domestic front, Trump’s election is just shy of legalising racism in the US once more. As for Obama, he believes, Obama’s healthcare policies and his “fight” (whatever good he has done) against racism is radically different from not just Trump’s politics, but those of other US presidents as well.Yeah, I realise this is pretty much not a battle I can hope to win, but since this enlightened centrist in question is my brother, I feel obligated to try to convince him of the error of his ways, which I realise is a terrible idea because it ends up pissing me off even more. I am counting on his claim that he sees “facts and logic” above all else, and thus clinching on to the pipe dream that maybe I might persuade him. Sadly, amerikkkan politics happens to be my kryptonite as I frankly don’t really give a shit about the US because it’s a place that has totally been FUBAR. Yet, this issue of systemic racism is a proletarian one, and I feel the need to be competent enough to tackle this. Hence, I would like to seek the help of more well-read comrades here to assist me with debunk my brother’s centrist political takes. Or maybe I should just give up? Either way, thanks Comrades. via /r/communism https://ift.tt/3dk2YZV
