What happened to conservatives and libertarians when their delusions fall?

As I see it, a lot of conservatives and libertarians function on a few assumptions that almost always wrong:They got to where they are on their own meritsIf society have to make any sacrifice, they and their families would never be the one put onto the chopping boardThere is a higher power that is always good, whether is it God, the Constitution, the institutions, or the marketEconomic growth is endless.So what happen when any conservative or libertarian realizes one or all of these assumptions are wrong?
