North Korea question after reading the articles about them

So whenever I see a picture from space or anything like that the lights seem to be out in North Korea and any video game all lights are out in NK. The articles seem to make NK look like they are actually a perfectly normal place with people who are living good lives and that the media just makes them appear to be slaved, poorly fed people. How is NK always dark? Do the people really not care about internet and what not or are the NK government trying to prevent corruption from the outside?
